Fitting on the fly: Introduction to Specialty Lens Fitting

Topographies looking like tea leaves? Relax, Dr Margaret Lam is here to help add flexibility to your rigid lens fitting regimen!

In an introductory rigid lens fitting lecture, Dr Lam will take us through the A's, B's and C's of how to choose a first rigid lens, including lens families, on-eye calculations, topography interpretation and practical tips for fitting success.

Dr Lam has a wealth of knowledge on this intricate topic, and we are delighted to have her share this talk with our members.  Come pick her brain and bring your difficult questions as we open the floor to discussion at the conclusion of the event. 

About Dr Margaret Lam:

Dr Lam graduated from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences and completed her Post Graduate qualifications in Ophthalmic Medicines Prescribing from the University of New South Wales. She practices full scope optometry and primary eye care as well as having expertise in specialty contact lenses. These include myopia management, dry eye, and specialty contact lens fitting, including prescribing for orthokeratology, keratoconus, corneal ectasia and rehabilitative contact lenses. She has received the Neville Fulthorpe Award for Clinical Excellence.

Aside from full-time work, Dr Lam is also passionate about teaching and mentoring. She is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer for the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales, and mentors Undergraduate and Postgraduate Masters Students in Advanced Contact Lenses.

Dr Lam is an advocate and leader in the profession as she currently serves as the National Vice President of the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia and is the National President of Optometry Australia. She also has several Advisory roles with leading contact lens companies, and has written for the Optometry journals mivision, Insight, Australian Optometry, Optometry Connection and Clinical and Experimental Optometry.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To understand lens families and common fitting philosophies in order to determine your choice of the initial lens in a variety of complex corneal conditions.
  • To revise concepts such as on-eye lens parameter calculations as well as topography interpretation.
  • To gain an appreciation of practical tips employed in speciality lens fitting.
